President of École Polytechnique and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris since 2018, Eric Labaye will step down as head of both institutions on September 16th. He takes stock of the many progress made during his five years in office.

Olesia Dmytruk, from the Center for Theoretical Physics, and Léa Pessin, from the Center for Research in Economics and Statistics, are awarded a Starting Grant from the European Research Council. Olesia Dmytruk's project, supported by the CNRS, concerns the topological phases of matter. Léa Pessin's grant, supported by GENES, will study social inequalities in family-work strategies.

Acquiring precise information on the structure of the cornea is essential to understanding its ability to maintain good visual acuity. A team from the Optics and Biosciences Laboratory (LOB*) has developed an original approach combining second harmonic generation microscopy and polarimetry to image the lamellar microstructure of human corneas. These results have been published in the journal Light: Science and Applications.

The summary of the sixth assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), published in March 2023, is unequivocal: human-induced climate change is widespread, rapid and is intensifying. A gene known to be mutated in gynecological tumors has been identified as a major regulator of cell migration persistence. The product of this gene enables the cell to repeat an elementary migration step. This study, published in Nature Communications, uncovers a previously unknown alternative migration machinery. Institut Polytechnique de Paris announces the launch of the fourth edition of the call for projects "Prematuration", offering a unique opportunity for researchers and innovators to turn their promising ideas into innovative projects. The main aim of this call for projects is to clarify the relevant application of these projects and to achieve an initial proof of concept.

An article published in the journal RNA, in which researchers from the Structural Biology of the Cell Laboratory (BIOC*) took part, investigates the synthesis and maturation pathways of ribosomal RNA in three archaea living in different extreme environments. Using a new sequencing technique, this study revealed similarities between the three archaea, providing a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in adapting to extreme conditions.

A joint study by French and Czech scientists involving the Optics and Biosciences Laboratory has just carried out the first analysis of the presence of specific DNA structures, known as G-quadruplexes, in ancient genomes of the hepatitis B virus, some of which date back as far as 10,000 years. This study reveals that the proportion of G-quadruplexes in these genomes has increased over the millennia, becoming close to that of the current human genome.
