An official delegation from Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) will be participating in COP 28, which will take place in Dubai this December. It includes representatives from Ecole Polytechnique, which has been granted the RINGO observer status since 2022.

At the Laboratoire des solides irradiés (Irradiated Solids Laboratory - LSI*), Luca Perfetti's team uses the FemtoArpes instrument to scrutinize the movement of electrons in materials in real time. Based on the principle of photoemission, the instrument has received a €500,000 grant from the Île-de-France region for a technical upgrade that will enable researchers at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris to maintain their leading role in the field.

Institut Polytechnique de Paris is deeply saddened to announce the passing this week of Berrie Giebels, physicist at the Leprince-Ringuet Laboratory (LLR) and Deputy Director of IN2P3, from an illness. Berrie was a major figure in high-energy gamma-ray astronomy in France.

Manon Blanc and Oliver Bournez, researchers at the Computer Science Laboratory of the École Polytechnique, have been awarded a prize at the international symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science for their work characterizing the complexity of functions over real numbers.

Thierry Coulhon, officially appointed Acting Chairman of the Board of Institut Polytechnique de Paris on September 27, has received an engagement letter signed by the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu and the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, Bruno Le Maire. The letter instructs him to "prefigure key transformations at Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) and take over its executive management".

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics honored experiments capable of producing extremely short flashes of light, of the order of a billionth of a billionth of a second. These attosecond flashes can now be used to "see" the movement of electrons. The Laboratoire d'optique appliquée (Applied Optics Laboratory LOA*) has played a major role in the development of these techniques, and is continuing research in this field today. Focus on this science of the ultrafast and the infinitely small.

The WHIRLS project is led by a team of international scientists, including Sabrina Speich, a researcher at the Dynamic Meteorology Laboratory (LMD*). Its aim is to study the influence of small-scale processes in the ocean, such as whirls, on climate and marine biodiversity. It is funded by a Synergy grant from the European Research Council (ERC).

Stéphane Gaubert, Inria research director at CMAP, Véronique Lazarus, professor at ENSTA Paris and researcher at IMSIA, and Oana Goga, CNRS research fellow at LIX, were honored by the French Academy of Sciences on October 17, 2023. They respectively received the Michel Montpetit - INRIA Prize, the ONERA Mechanical Sciences for Aeronautics and Aerospace Prize and the Lovelace Babbage Prize.

The European Optical Society has awarded its 2023 Best Paper prize for a publication by a team led by Tatiana Novikova from the Laboratory of Physics of Interfaces and Thin Films (LPICM*). Their research studies show that the transmission Mueller microscopy combined with the machine learning methods and statistical analysis can help to assess the gastric tissue pathologies.

After an initial phase dedicated to its creation and positioning under the presidency of Eric Labaye, the Institute is now entering the second phase of its development, dedicated to its acceleration and growth, reinforced by a reform of its governance.
